Remote work makes them more productive

Remote work has revolutionized the way we work in Canada.

It improves productivity, enhances work life balance for millions of workers, saves the government money, and reduces traffic and pollution with fewer cars on the roads.

Remote work is how we’ll build the public service of tomorrow. One that uses cutting-edge technology, but still maintains the human touch. That sets the bar for all workers in Canada and puts people first. That focuses on delivering the best services to families and business and saves taxpayers money.  That creates a diverse public service from communities all across Canada.

It’s time to embrace the future of work in Canada.

Canadians spend...

On average 8.5 hours a week — that’s 17 days a year — commuting to work

Remote work means less
traffic and pollution

No one wants to start their day stuck in soul-crushing traffic.  Less cars on the road means less traffic in our cities – making everyone’s commute shorter and giving more space to workers who have to be on the road like first responders, delivery drivers and frontline workers.

Research from Carleton university also shows that remote work during the pandemic helped reduce emissions in Ottawa by 25 per cent and 65 per cent in Quebec. Imagine what that could look like in other major cities if flexible work became the norm.

Remote work saves you money...

$6 billion for taxpayers alone

Remote work saves money

Remote work allows people to be more effective in environments that better meet their needs. This means significant budget savings and increased productivity for the federal government. The federal government’s own research shows remote work for federal workers would save taxpayers $6 billion dollars by repurposing half of its federal buildings. These savings can be reinvested into improving public services, building affordable housing and investing in communities.

Good work can happen outside of an office tower

Remote work benefits workers

Every worker has unique needs and so does every job. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for Canada’s diverse public service. By prioritizing remote work, collaboration, and the well-being of workers, the government can demonstrate a commitment to innovation, equity, and progress that other employers across the country can and should follow.

Remote work creates happier and more productive workplaces

Remote work builds strong communities

Remote work allows hardworking, talented people living in rural and Indigenous communities the same opportunities as urban Canadians. This means a more diverse public service, invigorated local economies, and improved access to services for people across Canada. Now is not the time to limit opportunities.

Boosting productivity

Stats Canada data shows that productivity in the federal public service grew by 4.5 per cent between 2019 and 2023, far outpacing the private sector, all while working remotely.

Cost savings

Remote work saves money for the government and makes life more affordable for workers, allowing them to save on gas, childcare, and more.

Driving diversity

Remote work is building a diverse federal public service, opening up jobs to talented people living in remote, rural, and Indigenous communities across Canada.

Let's clear the air...

Remote work could cut emissions by 25% in Canada’s major cities.

Why federal unions are taking action

Canada’s federal unions are committed to championing the rights and well-being of public service workers across Canada.

The federal government’s arbitrary government-wide office mandate was made without notice or consultation, and completely goes against a commitment made by the government during bargaining. Public sector workers prioritize the public, the government is prioritizing itself.

Tell the government to prioritize good work and end the mandate.
